Injections for AIDS-Related Lipoatrophy

Lipoatrophy is a condition associated with aging and disease, where the face and body begins to look much older because of loss of fat. Technically this is caused by a loss of fat in the body due to the side effects of the drugs that are taken to battle the ravages of HIV. This causes the individual to look gaunt and ill, even though the disease might be completely in remission and under control.

In Module 2 of our Mesotherapy course at the Pinewood Institute we teach practitioners how to administer fat injections to help out HIV sufferers who may have changed drastically in their appearance due to treatment with drugs. You will learn all about the suggested protocols for improving this condition including Mesoreflexo.

The Causes of Lipotrophy

The causes of lipoatrophy is agreed to be the side effect of three major drugs used to handle the disease.  Drugs that can cause your patient to lose fat from his or her face are –

D4T (stavudine, Zerit)
AZT (zidovudine, Trorovir, Combivir and Trizivir)
ddI (didanosine, Videx)
protease inhibitors

Sufferers of AIDS can also acquire that gaunt, haunted look and lose more fat from the body if they had a greater amount of immune damage at the start of the treatment.[1]   The amount of fat lost from the face is measured in degrees in four stages from mild to severe. The condition can take just a few months to develop to a few years depending on the amount of medication that you client must take to stay well.

Many AIDS patients just simply have no choice but to continue taking these drugs that ravage their appearance and that is where your role as a mesotherapy practitioner can be very useful, especially if you are a talented cosmetician with a real eye for creating a balanced look to the face.

Treatment for Lipoatrophy

There is no cure for lipoatrophy, because the damage done by the drugs to the mitochondria in the cells is permanent. However, the appearance of your patient can greatly be enhanced with mesotherapy injections.  Applied artfully, you can restore many patients back to their original appearance or at least take away that thin and ill appearance that still, in this century, triggers stigma against people with HIV. This can make it easier for the recovering patient to get a job and it is good for the self-esteem.

Mesotherapy can be a godsend for the individual who is suffering from loss of fat in the face. There are many different types of fillers, that you will be introduced to in this course that can be used to fill in hollow cheeks and eye sockets and help lift sagging skin.  The patient will look healthier and more youthful and quite literally be in a position to show their best face to the world.
